Navigating the path to adulthood is a challenging journey for any young person, but for youth in care, the road can be particularly complex.
These young individuals often face unique barriers and at Partners for Youth (PFY), we recognize the critical need to support youth in care as they transition into the workforce, or higher education, empowering them with the skills, resources, and confidence necessary to build successful futures.
Understanding
the Challenges
Youth
in care frequently encounter obstacles that their peers may not face. These can
include:
- Lack of Stable Support Networks: Without a stable family or support system, youth in care may
struggle to find mentors and role models who can guide them in their career
choices. - Educational Disruptions: Frequent moves and changes in school placements can lead to
gaps in education and a lack of consistent academic support. - Limited Work Experience: Many youth in care have fewer opportunities for part-time
jobs or internships, which are crucial for gaining work experience and
developing job skills. - Emotional and Psychological Barriers: The trauma and instability experienced by youth in
care can impact their self-esteem and confidence, making it difficult for them
to envision and pursue career goals.
These barriers are often interconnected, leading to under/unemployment, lack of stable housing, and, in many cases, homelessness.
PFY’s Road
Map/Youth Works Initiative
PFY’s
Youth Works program is dedicated to assisting current and former youth in care,
as well as at-risk youth, who feel lost and overwhelmed when considering their
career and employment future. The program primarily targets youth approaching
adulthood who may need additional support to guide them toward a more
successful future.
The
program focuses on several key areas: career development, employment,
education, and social and emotional development. It includes workshops and
mentoring sessions that teach essential job readiness skills, such as job
searching, job profiling, interview techniques, and resume writing. A
significant aspect of the program is supporting youth as they explore
post-secondary education opportunities. These workshops are complemented by
mentoring and a formal experiential education component, which emphasizes group
development and social and emotional learning.
Another
critical element of the program is the ongoing support provided to youth to
help them maintain employment and succeed post-placement. PFY has established a
network of employment opportunities, including work experience, co-ops,
internships, placements, and apprenticeships. We have built strong
relationships with community organizations, agencies, and businesses that offer
at-risk youth the chance to grow their skills and gain work experience in
supportive, compassionate, and understanding environments.
Additionally,
the program provides support to help youth gain stability in housing and
physical and mental health, ensuring they are properly prepared for the
program. Access to employment training is available, equipping youth to meet
the requirements for their chosen career path and employment goals more
effectively.
A Brighter Future
At PFY,
we believe that every young person, regardless of their background, deserves
the opportunity to achieve their career goals and build a bright future. By
addressing the unique challenges faced by youth in care and providing them with
the support and resources they need, we are helping to create a generation of
capable, confident, and empowered young adults who can make meaningful contributions
to their communities.
