In
our 30th year, our mission at Partners for Youth (PFY) remains steadfast: to
engage young people facing challenges and obstacles in their lives, helping
them become capable, connected, and contributing members of their communities.
For three decades, we have been dedicated to this mission through innovative
programs and services that promote experiential learning in safe, supportive,
and rewarding environments.
To
achieve this mission, we collaborate with public, private, and non-profit
partners, creating a network of support that empowers young people to make
healthy lifestyle choices, discover and develop their strengths, and build
essential leadership skills. As we celebrate this milestone year for our
organization, we reflect on the foundations of our work, which are based on
four key theoretical perspectives:
1. Adventure-Based Learning
Adventure-Based
Learning has its roots in the rich history of expedition-style experiences and
experiential education. This approach involves engaging youth in challenging
and adventurous activities that promote personal growth, teamwork, and
problem-solving skills. By stepping out of their comfort zones, participants
learn to overcome obstacles and build resilience.
2. Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Social
and Emotional Learning is an educational movement centered on the belief that
youth who understand and manage their emotions and interact constructively with
others are better equipped to learn and succeed. SEL helps young people develop
self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills, which are crucial for
academic achievement and overall well-being.
3. Trauma-Informed Practice
Trauma-Informed
Practice recognizes that trauma is an emotional wound that can threaten an
individual’s psychological integrity. This trauma can stem from various
experiences, including violence, neglect, racism, abandonment, and loss of
loved ones. Our programs are designed to be sensitive to the impacts of trauma,
providing a safe and supportive environment where youth can heal and thrive.
4. Strengths Perspective
The
Strengths Perspective is a social work theory that focuses on the capacities
and potentialities of individuals and communities. Rather than concentrating on
problems or deficits, this approach emphasizes enabling youth to articulate and
work towards their hopes for the future. By building on their strengths, we
empower young people to achieve their goals and make positive contributions to
their communities.
