As another school year comes to a close, children and youth across New Brunswick are looking ahead to the long days of summer.

For much of the year, young people move through highly structured environments. Their days are organized around classes, assignments, activities, and expectations. There is always another deadline, another practice, another responsibility waiting around the corner.

Summer offers something different. It creates space.

Space to rest after a busy year. Space to reflect on new experiences. Space to pursue interests that do not fit neatly into a school timetable. Space to explore, imagine, create, and grow.

We often think of growth as something that happens during the school year, through lessons, activities, and achievements. But childhood is shaped just as much by what happens in between.

There is something almost timeless about summer in childhood. The experiences may seem ordinary, even cliché: swimming at a pool or lake, riding bikes with friends, barbecues, the smell of freshly cut grass, long evenings outdoors, trips to the park, campfires, pickup games, ice cream on a hot day, or simply spending hours outside with nowhere in particular to be.

Yet these are often the moments that stay with us. They become woven into our memories and, in ways we may not fully appreciate at the time, help shape who we become.

Summer sits between one school year and the next. It is a season of transition a time to absorb what has been learned, gain new experiences, develop confidence and independence, and prepare for what comes next.

Of course, summer also brings opportunities to try something new. Whether through camp, community programs, sports, volunteering, summer employment, or simply exploring a new interest, young people are often exposed to experiences that challenge them, broaden their perspective, and help them discover strengths they did not know they had.

At Partners for Youth, we are reminded each year that growth is not always obvious in the moment. A new skill, a challenge overcome, a newfound confidence, an emerging interest, or the freedom to explore something unfamiliar can influence a young person’s future in ways that may not be fully understood until much later.

As we welcome summer, we hope children and youth across our province have the opportunity to enjoy a season that is not only memorable, but meaningful a season filled with discovery, adventure, rest, and the simple experiences that make childhood summers so special.

Summer is more than a break from learning. It is one of the seasons in which many core memories are formed and childhood moves from one chapter to the next.
