A new school year can bring excitement and anticipation. There are new classes, new people, new routines and the possibility that this year may feel different from the last. At the same time, you may be wondering where you will fit, who you will sit with, whether friendships have changed or whether you can manage what is expected of you.

For some students, going back to school also means carrying things that other people may not see.

Your life may feel less stable or more complicated than the lives of the people around you. You may be living somewhere new, dealing with challenges at home, worrying about money or carrying responsibilities that other students do not have. It can be difficult not to compare yourself, and there may be fear or shame in feeling different.

Those circumstances are part of your life right now, but they are not the full measure of who you are or what your future can become. These years, and the fears that come with them, will not last forever.

Try to go into school knowing that you belong there just as much as anyone else. You have the same right to learn, to ask questions, to take part and to imagine more for yourself. You do not need to have the same life as someone else to deserve the same opportunities.

You also do not have to manage everything alone.

Ask for help before things become overwhelming. Speak to a teacher, guidance counsellor, youth worker, coach or another adult you trust. Help may mean support with schoolwork, assistance with a practical problem, a quiet place to talk or simply having someone listen.

Trust that there are people who want to help. Needing support does not make you weak or difficult. Most people need it at different points in their lives, including long after school is over.

School is not only about marks or finishing assignments. It is also where you begin to understand how you learn, what interests you and what you are capable of. Learning gives you knowledge, but it can also give you confidence. Not because you will always know the answer, but because you begin to trust that you can ask questions, work things out and keep going when something is difficult.

That confidence matters. It can help you speak for yourself, make better decisions and see possibilities that may not be visible to you yet.

You do not have to begin the year certain of who you are or where you are going. Begin by showing up, staying open and remembering that your present circumstances do not decide how far you can go.

You belong there.
