In our work, youth engagement is not just a component; it is the cornerstone. The value of youth voice in developing projects and programs cannot be overstated. Yet, beyond the immediate impact on these initiatives, there lies a broader and more profound goal: ensuring that youth voices are amplified and that those with lived experiences have a direct influence on public policy and legislation that affects them.
Youth engagement is a critical part of our mission, and we see the transformative power it holds. When young people are given a platform to express their views, particularly those with firsthand experience, they offer unique insights that are invaluable in shaping policies and programs that are truly effective and relevant.
Take, for instance, the New Brunswick Youth in Care Network and the New Brunswick Youth Council. These two strategic programs have significantly impacted public policy, setting powerful examples of youth advocacy in action. Through these initiatives, young people have played pivotal roles in shaping legislation and public services that directly affect their lives.
One of the most notable achievements of youth advocacy in New Brunswick is the new Child and Youth Wellbeing Act. Youth involved in the New Brunswick Youth in Care Network were instrumental in crafting this legislation. Their input ensured that the act addresses the real needs and concerns of children and youth in care, leading to more comprehensive and effective support systems.
Another significant milestone for youth advocacy is the establishment of the New Brunswick Youth Mental Treatment Centre in Moncton. The involvement of the New Brunswick Youth Council in this project ensured that the facility’s design and services are tailored to the needs of young people. By directly influencing this initiative, youth advocates have helped create a centre that will better serve their peers, providing essential mental health support in a more responsive and empathetic manner.
In both these cases, the voices of young people were not just heard but were integral to the decision-making process. This direct involvement is crucial because it ensures that policies and programs are not just about youth but are shaped by them. When youth voices are heard and respected, the resulting policies are more likely to be effective, equitable, and sustainable.
As we continue our work, we must strive to create more opportunities for youth engagement and advocacy. By doing so, we ensure that young people are not only beneficiaries of change but active participants in creating it. Their voices are powerful tools for social transformation, and when amplified, they can drive meaningful and lasting improvements in public policy and legislation.
